Jakob Schrenck von Notzing (1539-1614) was a Bavarian nobleman and historian in the Austrian service of Duke Ferdinand II of Tyrol, who commissioned Schrenck von Notzing to create a picture book of his collection of armor. The Augburg engraver Dominicus Custos made the illustrations based on designs by Giovanni Battista Fontana.

A copy of this set of woodcuts is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art “…the finest ancient illustration of armor in existence.”  OD 19 1/2″ x 13 7/8″,  plate 17″ x 11 9/16″. Copper engraving. Annotations in old sepia ink of plate number 117 and handwritten title in sepia at foot of image.
